A Girl Guides Pacific Regional Development workshop has revealed that young people are abusing the use of social network sites.
This results in abusive behaviour and conflicts.
More abuse has been reported on social networks, particularly Facebook, as a result of mobile phone technology introduction in PNG.
Belle Karikaru is a concerned Girl Guide leader of Morobe province, who works closely with young people in schools.
She says most school aged children own mobile phone that influences their mindset once they log on to social sites – with females mostly at risks.
She says young people end up doing illegal activities like alcohol consumption, boy-girl relationships, and early teenage pregnancy that affects their formal education.
Karikaru says lack of parental guidance is the primary cause; parents are solely responsible for the ethical conduct of children.
