THE Government is looking to adopt online security models that are being used in other countries, says Information and Communication Technology Department deputy secretary Russel Woruba. “The Australian government has a good model that depicts how online safety is managed. “It had been adopted by Fiji, this is one of the models the ministry is exploring by which we can be better responsive to cybersecurity,” Woruba said. He highlighted the difficulties faced today in respect to internet and cybersecurity, saying that the introduction of fast internet services, although a positive development, has come with challenges. “Web service is more available now than it was before.
“Fast internet came with challenges; it came with censorship challenges and ethical challenges,” Woruba said. “But we cannot prosecute or hold anyone to account unless it’s within the confines of our law.” He said misinformation and questionable content were among those challenges and addressing these challenges required policies and legislations, as well as cooperation among stakeholders. However, he pointed out that advancing technology would always leave policy and legislation playing catch-up. He said in order to get ahead of that, the Government needed “a really good framework that allows us to adapt and respond to changes in the industry”. Woruba said there were attempts at dealing with misinformation over the internet, through the creation of the social media management desk which coordinated how the Government responded to misinformation. “But we cannot prosecute or hold anyone to account unless it’s within the confines of our law,” he said.
