THE Papua New Guinea Censorship office will be taking action in areas involving technology that needs censoring, with the new Censorship Act. Chief Censor Steven Mala said the Classification of Publications (Censorship) Act of 1989 was outdated and did not cater for newly-introduced technology. Mala said a review of the act had been completed and would be refined by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General (DJAG) before the bill is taken to Parliament. “The review is timely, considering technologies like the internet and mobile phones which are now widely used,” he said. “These forms are escalating difficulties.
“Thus, surpassing traditional role of regulating and monitoring indecent information content. “Refining and finalising the revised national censorship policy is critical in shaping the next generation and ensuring they will uphold and embrace acceptable moral standards and ethical values for a prosperous and informed society. Mala was responding to censorship issues raised by key stakeholders, non-government organisations, churches, women’s groups, educational institutions and provincial government representatives from Mamose during a consultation workshop on the revised Censorship Policy Two of 2019 to 2023 at Madang Resort last Friday. The workshop raised issues of introduced questionable foreign entertainment cultures of pole dancing, wet T-shirt contests, cage dancing and body painting which were happening in night clubs. It was recommended for the entertainment industry to have a code of conduct. The workshop looked at the issue of artists recording elsewhere without a proper studio setup; was any developer of music producing computerised applications needed to be licensed and those producing music using the application needed to acquire a license from developer to produce music. The Mamose workshop also recommended that the Censorship office continued to run awareness campaigns on the offences in music industry such as piracy.
