A SUBMISSION will be made to the National Executive Council (NEC) to set up a command centre as well as for the introduction of the smart and safe city model, Information Communication Technology Minister Timothy Masiu says. “I will be bringing to the Cabinet a submission for a command centre and for the smart and safe city model to be introduced in Papua New Guinea next year.” Masiu said this during bmobile’s pre-launch ceremony of the 5G service in Port Moresby last week.
Department secretary Steven Matainaho said they were currently looking at how technology could improve service delivery. “It’s a new concept, and a narrowed area of a smart city,” he said. “Smart city is a broad term but we’re looking specifically at effective coordination of communication.” Meanwhile, National Information Communication Technology Authority (Nicta) chief executive officer Charles Punaha said there were a lot of cities in the world such as Singapore and some parts of China who were currently using that concept. “The deployment of 5G has made it easier for these technologies to work,” he said. “So, obviously as part of the process, PNG has to go and visit one of those cities. There is still a lot of work to be done.” Punaha said consultation was yet to take place. “For the last five years when we were running the digital seminars, Huawei has been displaying the smart cities models. “With the deployment of the 5G network, this becomes an application that can be deployed everywhere.” The National Next : PORT MORESBY RESIDENT WINS BEMOBILE’S TOP PRIZE Comments are closed.
