Water PNG in partnership with Bank South Pacific recently launched the BSP Mobile Merchant Payments on *131# Mobile Banking service. Nuni Kulu and Peter Komon_thumb As a distributer of water to 20 districts in Papua New Guinea and manages the sewage system in provincial centre, Water PNG has on-board an innovative and efficient way to give quality service to its customers. With the advantage of increased number of BSP Mobile banking users, Water PNG, through their partnership will enable customers to make payments from home, office or anywhere using the *131# Mobile Banking service. "Paying water bill is now made simple and secure for Water PNG customers across PNG. Over 300,000 BSP Mobile Banking Customers can now make payments as often as they wish without visiting the Water PNG office. Payment is received in real time and no cash handling for Water PNG." Says Digital General Manager Nuni Kulu at the launch at Hilton hotel recently. "The simplest 'one bang' phone costs as low as K45 in the market is changing people's acceptance to this alternative way of payments. Mobile Banking services appeals to all literacy levels and is an affordable banking solution for the masses because BSP has made the session time free, the customer does not require mobile credits to carry out their payment or financial transaction, all they need is an active SIM and a mobile device," added Kulu. Water PNG Board Chairman Hubert Namani said, "Water PNG is pioneering government services adoption of digital payments for such utility services. Digital solutions are now available in our markets, and Water PNG is advocating for a non-cash payments. Customers should use BSP Mobile Banking, because it is cost-effective and accessible across all provinces". "This is a smart initiative undertaken by the management and we are pleased to work with BSP to put this through," said Mr Namani. Apart from the BSP Mobile Banking, customers are also encouraged to pay water and sewage bills through the BSP EFTPoS terminals, and start to reduce having to make cash payments.
