LAE Met Supt Chief Insp Chris Kunyanban is concerned about the increase in cybercrime cases over the last few weeks. He mentioned that assault cases reported to police over the last few weeks had risen as well as breaking and entering and stealing. Met Supt Kunyanban said cybercrime was on the rise in Lae and it was a serious offence and police were getting tough on those perpetrators. “Last week alone, five cases of cybercrime were reported to police and this is like one case reported daily,” he said.
He said cybercrime was rising as more people used social media and mobile phones to attack each other. Met Supt Kunyanban said the city also experienced four minor armed robberies last week in different suburbs. The crimes were committed along the Miles, Back Road and other areas where perpetrators held up people and made off with their belongings. He said one stolen motor vehicle was recovered last week. He said an ethnic clash between people from Wosera and Yangoru in East Sepik residing at the Back Road area in Lae was brought under control by police. “I have spoken to all leaders last Friday to solve the issue and they met on Sunday and solved it.” Meanwhile, he urged the 67 recently promoted police officers in Lae to display quality work.
