By Des Yaninen Last year I wrote an article about how to make money from social media. There are so many ways that I can't cover it all in one article so expect me to write on the same topic throughout the year. In this article, I look specially at the value of Facebook groups. So, you're the Administrator of a Facebook group. You just share random stuff and allow discussion. If you needed money for something, perhaps you could consider selling your FB group. But for how much? Well today in 2021, it's a lot more difficult to grow the audience of your FB group from zero to 100,000 members than it was in say 2012. I remember between the years 2008 to till about 2018, you could create a group and just add members. Today - you can't just add members. FB has changed the rules. You can only "suggest" the group to people and they have 30 days to decide if they want to join it or not. What does that mean? Well unless you have really good topic that people want to discuss (like current news, crime, politics, sports, music, etc...), you will hardly be able to grow a group to over 10,000 members.
Who desperately needs access to a Facebook group with an audience of thousands of existing members? Let's say an old political party like People's Democratic Movement (PDM) realizes that it has to reach an online audience on Facebook to improve it's chances of success in the 2022 elections. They saw the success that Sam Basil and Bryan Kramer had in 2017 by using social media and they want to use that strategy as well. So PDM assembles a social media team and create a new FB group for their political propaganda and share their views on how they think PNG should be run. They find that it is now harder to create a group and grow your audience to thousands of people all over PNG. What should PDM do? They can buy off an existing FB group with members all over PNG and then rebrand it to share their views. This leads to why I wrote this article. If you are an FB group Admin, HOW MUCH IS YOUR GROUP WORTH? The monetary value I place on a group is made up of many factors. These include FB's rule changes, the value of time it takes for the Admin to grow a group, and the value of the members you already have. Today, group admins do it in their free time. In the future, it will be a full time job and people will be paid between K500 to K2,000 a fortnight just to be an admin.
Tier 3 groups are those like PNG News founded by Charlie Gilichibi, or Lazarus Towa's LT Employment Group or Sylvia Pascoe's SME 4 Change Group. These get hundreds of posts and engagements a day, reach thousands of people, and are very very influential. PNG News with 300,000 members would have a market value of K600,000. This is fitting because the group is almost 10 years old and the admins have been working hard for a long time and have successfully influenced the outcome of elections. LT's group with 250,000 members should be worth K500,000. A Tier 2 group would be an say PNG NRL Fans with about 100,000 fans. This would be worth K100,000. Then you have these relationship groups like PNG Single Parents etc...which have around 80,000 members. This would be worth K40,000. So there you have it - my take on how much you can make if you opted to sell your group audience to a political party or a company. Note - members of the group have the right to "exit" the group if the purpose changes drastically. A news group will always remain a news group so it can only be acquired by say a political party with a national focus and commenting on national discussions. A too drastic change in the topic and purpose of the group can be detrimental. LT's employment group for example can be bought off by a global HR firm seeking to enter into the PNG market at this price point. As long as the buyer of the group keeps the group within the same field of interest it will work. Finally, the laws of supply and demand still apply. If you think your group is valued at K150,000 but no one is willing to buy it at that price then you'll have to accept what you can. If you need help valuing or selling your group then inbox or email me des@pacifund.com. if you're unemployed, how about you pick a industry and start you own group? You can get paid down the track.
